Columbia Rediviva collection, 1787-1967.

Collection of materials, both original and copies, relating to the ship Columbia Rediviva, namesake of the Columbia River. The ship was owned by Boston merchant Joseph Barrell (1740-1804) and circumnavigated the globe in 1791-1792. The collection consists of original materials and copies. Among the originals is the journal of John Hoskins, written during the Columbia's journey around the world in 1791-1792; journal of George Barrell, 1806, on board the brig Venus from Boston to Malaga, and on the schooner Louisiana from Malaga to New York; Barrell's account of stores on board the Columbia, 1792-1793; letters of Joseph Barrell to Samuel Webb, 1785-1801, and to John Hoskins, 1790; letters from Colburn Barrell and Robert Haswell, 1801; owner's accounts, 1787-1793; accounts of the Columbia and Lady Washington, 1787-1790; receipts; and 19th century prints of paintings by George Davidson depicting incidents in the voyages of the Columbia. Among the copies are: "Ship Columbia log..." by Robert Haswell and Owen Smith, September 28, 1790-October 3, 1791 (photostatic copy); "A voyage round the world onboard the ship Columbia and sloop Washington" by Robert Haswell, 1787-1789 (typescript copy); and a file of receipts and other papers concerning outfitting of the Columbia, 1790 (on microfilm). Also included are notes, clippings, and other research materials, Martha Gray's petition for a pension and memorial to Congress (1848 and 1852), as well as scale drawings of the Columbia made by Hewitt Richardson.

George Davidson was born in Boston in 1768, the son of a Scottish-American seaman. He began his career as a house painter and artist, but in the fall of 1790 he left with Captain Robert Gray on the ship Columbia for a voyage that would take them around the world.
